The Elan Estate is owned by Welsh Water. A greater part of it is vested in the Elan Valley Trust on a 999 year lease.
A principal function of the estate is the provision of a clean water supply – this means that the whole area is managed in an environmentally friendly way in order to protect the water quality. The area falls within the Cambrian Mountains Environmentally Sensitive area (ESA), is a Special Protection Area (SPA) for wild birds, has Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) for habitats and most of the land has been designated as various Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
We appreciate the significance of these designations and employ a team of Countryside Rangers to carry out practical habitat management, conservation and access work as well as helping the public to enjoy the natural history and beauty of the area.
The Elan Valley is an area of natural beauty but one that has also been shaped by man. It is a living landscape to be enjoyed and safeguarded by all of us.
Welsh Water is the sixth largest of the ten regulated water and sewerage companies in England and Wales. Responsible for providing over three million people with a continuous, high-quality supply of drinking water and for taking away, treating and properly disposing of the wastewater that is produced, we are fully committed to delivering best quality service at least possible cost.
Welsh Water is owned by Glas Cymru, a company limited by guarantee. Having no shareholders, it is not-for-profit and unique in the water and sewerage sector, run solely for the benefit of customers.
