Elan Valley Trail To Rhayader


A 1.5 hour walk from the Visitor Centre to the nearby town of Rhayader following the line of the old Birmingham Corporation Railway.

Route Details

Follow the Red Kite Waymarker along a linear tarmacked path that’s mostly flat and suitable for all users including wheelchairs and pushchairs. One steep hill on the outskirts of Cwmdauddwr at Rhayader Tunnel.

From the Visitor Centre, go down the drive and join the path on the left before the cattle grid. The path runs parallel to the road but just before the T-junction, cross the road and pick up the path on the right-hand side.

Follow the trail, crossing the road by the Elan Oaks Campsite.

Follow the trail, crossing the road by by Dol-Afallen Bridge. The path then increases in gradient at Rhayader Tunnel, before descending into Rhayader.

From the sculptural gateway (by artist Reece Ingram), turn right to walk into Rhayader for shops, cafes and more.
