Orienteering

Orienteering is a fun outdoor sport that’s suitable for every age and fitness level, working your body and mind!

It requires navigating around a set route and reading an orienteering map to find a point on the map and record it before setting off to find the next point.

Elan Valley and Mid Wales Orienteering Club have created two new orienteering courses, suitable for beginners and families. Both courses are on existing paths around Cnwch Woods.

Waterproof maps and instructions are available at the Visitor Centre at any time during open hours. A compass may be helpful but isn’t essential. Sturdy footwear is recommended.

There are two new courses in Cnwch Wood, suitable for families and beginners.

Course 1

1.3km / 0.8 miles A short loop around Cnwch Woods. This route is fairly flat although does cover some uneven terrain. This course has an additional challenge to record the last letter of each control point which will form the name of two birds of prey that are found in the Elan Valley.

Course 2

3.6km / 2.2 miles A longer route that climbs to the top of Caban Coch dam, continues through Cnwch Woods and Elan Village before finishing at the Visitor Centre.
